In order to stop the negative evolution of addiction, the first step is to accept, to talk openly about the problem and its consequences. Asking for help is often a difficult step to undertake, while being a decisive one.

Different therapeutic approaches can be taken into consideration in order to treat addictions. In each case an initial evaluation is necessary in order to adapt treatment to the person’s existing problems, according to his resources and the type of addiction he suffers from.

Di Clemente and Prochaska’s motivational model distinguishes different stages of personal awareness. There is a specific approach corresponding to each stage. Personal information plays an important role during the first stages, which in futur is followed by setting up a project for change and determining what steps should be undertaken to accomplish this.

Frequent individual sessions with a specialized therapist will be needed at specific stages of this process. At the same time or later on, couples’ or family therapy might be considered necessary in order to have a more comprehensive view of the situation. While a group approach is not an obligation, it is nevertheless considered an important element to aid motivation.

  • twelve step program
  • codependency
